COVID-19: Vulnerable groups at risk of severe illness

Certain groups, including the elderly, people with chronic conditions, and the immunocompromised, are at higher risk of severe COVID-19.

Overview

COVID-19 disproportionately affects vulnerable populations. Older adults and those with underlying health conditions are more likely to experience severe illness and complications.

At-Risk Groups

At-risk groups include the elderly (65+), people with chronic conditions (diabetes, heart disease, lung disease), the immunocompromised, and people with obesity.

Prevention

Vaccination is the most important protection. Wearing masks, social distancing, and good hygiene are also recommended.

Treatment

Early treatment with antiviral medications is critical for these groups. They should seek care as soon as they develop symptoms.

When to See a Doctor

At-risk individuals should consult a doctor immediately upon developing any symptoms of COVID-19.
