COVID-19 Treatments and Medications

An overview of treatments and medications available for COVID-19, including home care, antivirals, and hospital-based therapies.

Overview

Treatment for COVID-19 depends on the severity of the illness. Most mild cases can be managed at home with rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medications. For moderate to severe cases, antiviral medications and supportive hospital care may be required.

Home Care

For mild symptoms, treatment includes rest, drinking fluids, and taking over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Monitor your symptoms and seek medical help if they worsen.

Antiviral Medications

Oral antiviral medications like Paxlovid (nirmatrelvir-ritonavir) and Remdesivir are available to treat COVID-19 in high-risk individuals. They are most effective when started early in the course of the disease.

Hospital Treatment

For hospitalized patients, treatment may include oxygen therapy, corticosteroids (like dexamethasone), antiviral medications, and in severe cases, mechanical ventilation.

When to See a Doctor

Seek immediate medical care if you have trouble breathing, persistent chest pain, confusion, or bluish lips or face.
