COVID-19 Symptoms: Leg Pain

Leg pain can be a symptom of COVID-19, often related to muscle aches, but can also be a sign of blood clots.

Overview

Leg pain is a common symptom of COVID-19, primarily due to generalized muscle aches. However, it's important to distinguish this from more serious conditions like deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot that can occur in the legs.

Symptoms

A general aching or soreness in the leg muscles, similar to other body aches. A DVT, however, presents as localized swelling, warmth, redness, and severe pain in one leg.

Causes

Systemic inflammation from the virus can cause muscle pain. COVID-19 can also increase the risk of blood clots, which can cause pain in the calf or thigh.

Treatment

Muscle pain can be treated with rest and pain relievers. A suspected DVT is a medical emergency requiring immediate treatment with blood thinners.

When to See a Doctor

If leg pain is accompanied by swelling, redness, warmth, or a feeling of heaviness, seek immediate medical attention.
