COVID-19 Symptom: Tongue Sores and Changes

Changes to the tongue, including sores, swelling, and changes in texture, have been reported as symptoms of COVID-19.

Overview

Some people with COVID-19 experience changes in the appearance and sensation of their tongue, which is sometimes referred to as 'COVID tongue.' This can include sores, swelling, and a coated appearance.

Symptoms

A swollen tongue, discoloration, patchy or white coating, red or painful bumps on the tongue, and changes in the sense of taste.

Causes

This is likely due to the virus's effect on the cells of the oral cavity and the body's inflammatory response. It can also be caused by a secondary fungal or bacterial infection (like oral thrush).

Treatment

Good oral hygiene, staying hydrated, and using a soft toothbrush can help. If the cause is a fungal infection, antifungal medication may be needed.

When to See a Doctor

Consult a doctor or dentist if you have significant mouth pain, sores that don't heal, or if the tongue changes are accompanied by other concerning symptoms.
