Overview
Shortness of breath (dyspnea) is a significant and concerning symptom of COVID-19. It occurs when the virus causes inflammation in the lungs, making it difficult to breathe. It can be a sign of pneumonia or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which require immediate medical attention.
Symptoms
A feeling of being winded or unable to get enough air. It may be accompanied by chest tightness, rapid breathing, and a cough. It can be worse with physical activity.
Causes
The virus causes inflammation and fluid build-up in the air sacs (alveoli) of the lungs, impairing the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Treatment
Shortness of breath is a medical emergency that requires immediate evaluation. Treatment may involve oxygen therapy, antiviral medications, and in severe cases, mechanical ventilation.
When to See a Doctor
Seek emergency medical attention immediately if you experience any difficulty breathing.
