COVID-19 Symptom: Runny Nose

A runny nose is a common symptom of COVID-19, especially with the Omicron variant, similar to that of a common cold.

Overview

A runny nose (rhinorrhea) is a frequent symptom of COVID-19, particularly with newer variants. It involves the production of excess clear mucus from the nasal passages.

Symptoms

A clear, watery nasal discharge. It may be accompanied by sneezing, nasal congestion, and a post-nasal drip.

Causes

The virus infects the nasal mucosa, causing inflammation and increased production of mucus.

Treatment

Antihistamines or decongestants can help reduce runny nose symptoms. Saline nasal sprays and staying hydrated can also provide relief.

When to See a Doctor

A runny nose is usually not a cause for concern. However, if it persists beyond 10 days or is accompanied by high fever or facial pain, see a doctor.
