Overview
Rashes are a more common symptom of COVID-19 in children than in adults. They can present in several forms, including a maculopapular rash (flat red spots) or urticaria (hives).
Symptoms
Red patches, small bumps, or hives on the skin. It may be itchy or painless. It can appear anywhere on the body but is often on the trunk.
Causes
The rash is a sign of the body's immune response to the virus. It can also be a symptom of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C), a rare but serious condition.
Treatment
Over-the-counter antihistamines or hydrocortisone cream can help with itching. The rash usually resolves as the infection clears.
When to See a Doctor
Seek medical care if the rash is accompanied by a high fever, lethargy, or other symptoms of MIS-C.
