Overview
Skin rashes are a recognized but less common symptom of COVID-19 in adults. They can appear alongside or after other COVID-19 symptoms and vary widely in appearance. These rashes are a sign of the body's immune response to the virus.
Symptoms
Rashes can include red, itchy bumps (urticaria/hives), flat red patches (maculopapular rash), chilblain-like lesions on the toes and fingers (COVID toes), and general redness.
Causes
Rashes are caused by the body's immune system reacting to the virus. The inflammation can affect the skin's blood vessels and sweat glands.
Treatment
Treatment involves managing symptoms. Over-the-counter antihistamines can help with itching. Topical corticosteroids may be prescribed for severe or persistent rashes.
When to See a Doctor
Consult a doctor if the rash is accompanied by a high fever, is painful, blisters, or doesn't improve with antihistamines.
