Overview
A nosebleed (epistaxis) can occur during a COVID-19 infection. It is often a result of nasal irritation, dryness, and congestion. The inflamed and dry nasal passages are more susceptible to bleeding.
Symptoms
Bleeding from one or both nostrils. It may be accompanied by a feeling of dryness or a crust inside the nose.
Causes
The virus can cause inflammation of the nasal mucosa. Blowing your nose frequently due to congestion can also irritate the blood vessels. Dry air can worsen this.
Treatment
Pinch your nose for 10-15 minutes, lean slightly forward, and apply a cold compress to the bridge of your nose. Keep your head higher than your heart.
When to See a Doctor
Seek medical attention if the nosebleed is severe, lasts more than 30 minutes, or is accompanied by other serious symptoms.
