Overview
For people with a history of migraines, a COVID-19 infection can trigger severe migraine attacks. It can also cause new onset of severe headaches that mimic migraines.
Symptoms
Severe throbbing headache, often one-sided, accompanied by nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound. It may last from hours to days.
Causes
The inflammatory response to the virus can trigger the neurological pathways involved in migraines. The stress of illness is also a known trigger.
Treatment
Rest in a dark, quiet room. Over-the-counter pain relievers, or migraine-specific prescription medications (like triptans), can be used.
When to See a Doctor
If you have a sudden, severe 'worst headache of your life,' or if it is accompanied by neurological symptoms, seek immediate care.
