Overview
While not a common early symptom, COVID-19 can affect the kidneys, leading to pain in the flank or back. The virus can directly infect kidney cells, and the immune response can cause inflammation.
Symptoms
Pain in the back or side below the ribs, fever, and sometimes changes in urination (such as decreased output). It can be a sign of acute kidney injury.
Causes
The virus can bind to ACE2 receptors in the kidneys, causing damage. Severe inflammation and low oxygen levels during a severe infection can also stress the kidneys.
Treatment
Treatment focuses on managing the underlying COVID-19 infection and supporting kidney function. This may involve hospitalization and IV fluids.
When to See a Doctor
Severe kidney pain, especially with a decrease in urination, is a medical emergency and requires immediate attention.
