Overview
A headache is a frequent symptom of COVID-19. It can vary in intensity from mild to severe and can be one of the first symptoms to appear. The headache is often bilateral (affecting both sides of the head), and it may be persistent.
Symptoms
The headache is often described as a steady ache or a feeling of pressure in the head, not necessarily throbbing. It can be accompanied by light sensitivity and worsened by movement or coughing.
Causes
The exact mechanism is not fully understood, but it may be related to inflammation of the blood vessels in the brain (a cytokine storm) or to sinus congestion.
Treatment
Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help. Rest in a dark, quiet room can also provide relief.
When to See a Doctor
Consult a doctor if you experience a severe headache that is sudden or different from your usual headaches, or if it is accompanied by confusion, fever, or neck stiffness.
