COVID-19 Symptom: Eyes Pain and Redness

Eye pain and redness can be a symptom of COVID-19, often associated with conjunctivitis or other eye inflammations.

Overview

COVID-19 can cause eye-related symptoms, including pain, redness, and irritation. This is most commonly due to conjunctivitis, but other inflammatory conditions of the eye can also occur.

Symptoms

Redness in the white of the eye, irritation, a gritty feeling, pain, sensitivity to light, and watery discharge.

Causes

The virus can enter the eye through droplets or by touching the eyes with contaminated hands. The ACE2 receptors that the virus uses to enter cells are also present on the eye's surface.

Treatment

Lubricating eye drops (artificial tears) can soothe irritation. Avoid wearing contact lenses until symptoms clear. Do not use medicated eye drops without consulting a doctor.

When to See a Doctor

If you have severe eye pain, vision changes, or a thick, purulent discharge, you should see a doctor to rule out a more serious condition.
