COVID-19 Symptom: Dry Mouth

Dry mouth is a potential symptom of COVID-19, often caused by dehydration and inflammation.

Overview

Dry mouth, or xerostomia, can occur with COVID-19. It is often a consequence of fever, mouth breathing, or dehydration, but the virus may also affect the salivary glands directly.

Symptoms

A feeling of stickiness or dryness in the mouth, increased thirst, a dry throat, cracked lips, and a burning or tingling sensation in the mouth. It may also affect taste.

Causes

Fever, reduced fluid intake, mouth breathing due to nasal congestion, and inflammation of the salivary glands can all contribute to dry mouth during a COVID-19 infection.

Treatment

The primary treatment is increasing fluid intake. Sipping water frequently, using sugar-free lozenges or chewing gum to stimulate saliva flow, and using a humidifier can help.

When to See a Doctor

If dry mouth is persistent and accompanied by difficulty swallowing or speaking, consult your doctor.
