COVID-19 Symptom: Diarrhea

Diarrhea is a gastrointestinal symptom of COVID-19, affecting a significant number of patients.

Overview

Diarrhea is a relatively common gastrointestinal symptom in COVID-19. It can occur alone or alongside other symptoms like fever, cough, or loss of appetite. The virus can enter the digestive tract, causing inflammation and affecting gut health.

Symptoms

Frequent, watery bowel movements, often accompanied by abdominal cramping, nausea, and sometimes vomiting. It may be mild to severe.

Causes

The SARS-CoV-2 virus can bind to ACE2 receptors found in the lining of the gastrointestinal tract, leading to inflammation and altering gut motility and absorption.

Treatment

Stay well-hydrated with fluids containing electrolytes. A bland diet like the BRAT (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) diet can help. Over-the-counter anti-diarrheal medications are generally not recommended as they may prolong the infection, but can be used under a doctor's direction.

When to See a Doctor

Seek medical care if you have severe diarrhea, signs of dehydration (dry mouth, reduced urination, dizziness), bloody stools, or high fever.
