Overview
Cough is a hallmark symptom of COVID-19. It is often described as a new, persistent dry cough. While a dry cough is more typical, some patients may experience a productive (wet) cough. A cough can last for weeks after the initial infection.
Symptoms
A persistent dry cough that is often irritating and may be accompanied by a tickling sensation in the throat. In some cases, a cough may produce phlegm. It often worsens at night.
Causes
The virus infects the respiratory tract, including the airways and lungs, causing inflammation. This triggers the cough reflex as the body tries to clear the respiratory passages of irritants and mucus.
Treatment
A cough can be managed at home with over-the-counter cough syrups or lozenges. Staying hydrated, using a humidifier, and breathing in steam can help soothe the throat and airways. Honey has also been shown to be helpful.
When to See a Doctor
Seek medical attention if the cough is severe, persistent, produces blood, or is accompanied by shortness of breath, chest pain, or a fever that doesn't resolve.
