COVID-19 Symptom: Clogged Ears

Clogged or stuffy ears are a potential symptom of COVID-19, often related to congestion and inflammation of the upper respiratory tract.

Overview

A feeling of fullness, pressure, or a blockage in the ears can occur with COVID-19. This is often due to congestion, similar to what happens with a cold or flu, which can affect the Eustachian tube, the passage that connects the middle ear to the back of the throat.

Symptoms

A sensation of fullness in the ears, muffled hearing, popping or clicking sounds, and occasionally mild pain or discomfort.

Causes

The inflammation and excess mucus production from a COVID-19 infection can block the Eustachian tube, disrupting the normal pressure balance in the ear.

Treatment

Treatment involves addressing the congestion with nasal decongestants, antihistamines, or nasal saline sprays. Swallowing, yawning, or chewing gum can sometimes help open the Eustachian tube.

When to See a Doctor

See a doctor if the clogged ears are painful, accompanied by hearing loss, or don't improve after other COVID-19 symptoms resolve.
