COVID-19: swollen lymph nodes

Swollen lymph nodes can occur during a COVID-19 infection, often as the body's immune system responds to the virus.

Overview

Lymph nodes may become swollen during a COVID-19 infection. They may be felt in the neck, underarms, or groin. This is a sign that the immune system is working to fight the virus.

Symptoms

Tender, enlarged, or firm lymph nodes. They may be painful to the touch. They are often one of the first signs of the body fighting an infection.

Causes

The immune system produces more white blood cells to fight the virus, which can cause the lymph nodes to swell. This is a normal immune response.

Treatment

Swollen lymph nodes usually resolve on their own as the infection clears. Warm compresses and over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage tenderness.

When to See a Doctor

If the swelling is severe, persists after other symptoms resolve, or is accompanied by fever and weight loss, see a doctor.
