Overview
Many people experience hair loss a few months after recovering from COVID-19. This is usually a form of telogen effluvium, a temporary condition where stress pushes hair follicles into the resting phase, causing shedding.
Symptoms
Noticeable hair shedding, often when washing or brushing. The hair loss is generally diffuse (all over the scalp), and not in patches.
Causes
The physical stress of the illness (fever, inflammation) and the emotional stress are the main causes. The body's energy is diverted from hair growth to fighting the infection.
Treatment
Hair loss is usually temporary. Focus on good nutrition (iron, zinc, protein) and reducing stress. In most cases, hair regrows on its own within 6-12 months.
When to See a Doctor
If hair loss is severe, persistent, or causing distress, consult a dermatologist to rule out other causes.
