COVID-19 and urinary tract infection (UTI)

COVID-19 can be associated with urinary symptoms, including frequency, urgency, and in some cases, a UTI.

Overview

While not a primary symptom, COVID-19 can cause urinary symptoms or make you more susceptible to a urinary tract infection (UTI), especially in hospitalized patients with catheters.

Symptoms

Frequent or urgent need to urinate, burning sensation during urination, and lower abdominal pain. In severe cases, blood in the urine.

Causes

The virus can affect the kidneys and bladder. Hospitalized patients are at higher risk of UTIs. The dehydration from the illness can also concentrate urine and irritate the bladder.

Treatment

Drink plenty of fluids. If a bacterial UTI is confirmed, antibiotics are needed.

When to See a Doctor

If you have symptoms of a UTI, especially with fever or back pain, consult a doctor.
