COVID-19 and Sinus Infection

COVID-19 can cause sinus infections due to inflammation and congestion of the sinus cavities.

Overview

COVID-19 can cause sinusitis (sinus infection), which leads to facial pain, pressure, and congestion. It occurs when the nasal passages become blocked, trapping fluid and allowing bacteria to grow.

Symptoms

Facial pain or pressure, nasal congestion, headache, fever, and a reduced sense of smell. It can be a bacterial or viral complication.

Causes

The virus causes inflammation in the sinuses, blocking the openings. This can lead to a secondary bacterial infection.

Treatment

Decongestants, saline sprays, and pain relievers can help. If a bacterial sinus infection develops, antibiotics may be needed.

When to See a Doctor

If you have severe facial pain, a fever over 101°F, or symptoms that persist for more than 10 days, see a doctor.
