COVID-19 and Lupus

People with lupus, an autoimmune disease, may be at increased risk for severe COVID-19, especially if on immunosuppressive treatments.

Overview

Lupus is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks healthy tissues. People with lupus can be at higher risk for severe COVID-19 due to immune dysregulation and the use of immunosuppressive medications.

Risks

Increased risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and complications. The risk is higher if lupus is active or if patients are taking high-dose corticosteroids.

Prevention

COVID-19 vaccination is strongly recommended. Patients should continue taking their lupus medications unless advised otherwise by a rheumatologist.

Treatment Considerations

Antiviral medications are available and are often recommended. Corticosteroids may need to be adjusted.

When to See a Doctor

Contact your rheumatologist if you develop any COVID-19 symptoms.
