COVID-19 and COPD

People with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease are at higher risk for severe COVID-19 and should take extra precautions.

Overview

COPD is a group of lung diseases that block airflow and make breathing difficult. People with COPD are at a significantly higher risk of severe COVID-19 and complications.

Symptoms

Symptoms include those of COPD (shortness of breath, chronic cough, wheezing) combined with COVID-19 (fever, loss of smell, etc.). The illness can significantly worsen COPD symptoms.

Causes

COVID-19 affects the lungs, exacerbating the underlying inflammation and obstruction caused by COPD.

Treatment

Continue all COPD medications. COVID-19 treatment may include antiviral medications, steroids, and oxygen therapy. Early intervention is critical.

When to See a Doctor

Seek immediate medical attention if you have any signs of a COVID-19 infection or if your COPD symptoms worsen.
