COVID-19 and Constipation

Constipation can be a symptom of COVID-19 or a side effect of medications and dehydration during the illness.

Overview

Constipation, or difficulty passing stools, can occur during a COVID-19 infection. It may be a direct result of gastrointestinal involvement or caused by dehydration, reduced activity, or medication.

Symptoms

Infrequent bowel movements, hard and dry stools, straining during bowel movements, and a feeling of incomplete evacuation.

Causes

The virus can affect the gastrointestinal tract, slowing motility. Dehydration from fever and reduced food intake can also contribute. Medications like anti-diarrheal drugs can also cause constipation.

Treatment

Stay well-hydrated with water and clear fluids. Increase dietary fiber intake if possible. Over-the-counter stool softeners or mild laxatives may be used under a doctor's guidance.

When to See a Doctor

If you have severe abdominal pain, vomiting, or no bowel movement for several days, consult a doctor.
