Overview
Some studies suggest that people with blood type A may have a slightly higher risk of contracting COVID-19, while those with type O may have a slightly lower risk. The connection is not fully understood.
Causes
The link is thought to be related to blood type antigens and the way the virus interacts with red blood cells. The virus's spike protein may bind more easily to certain blood type antigens.
Treatment
Blood type does not change the treatment approach for COVID-19. All patients receive the same supportive and antiviral care.
When to See a Doctor
Focus on general health guidelines. Seeing a doctor depends on the presence of symptoms, not blood type.
