Cholecystitis

Cholecystitis is inflammation of the gallbladder, usually caused by a gallstone blocking the cystic duct, leading to severe abdominal pain.

Overview

Cholecystitis is an inflammation of the gallbladder, a small organ that stores bile. It can be acute (sudden) or chronic (long-lasting). It is often a complication of gallstones.

Symptoms

Symptoms include severe pain in the upper right abdomen, which may radiate to the back or right shoulder, nausea, vomiting, fever, and abdominal tenderness.

Causes

The most common cause is a gallstone blocking the cystic duct, causing bile to build up and leading to inflammation. Other causes include tumors, infections, or decreased blood supply.

Treatment

Treatment usually includes hospitalization, pain management, antibiotics, and often surgery (cholecystectomy) to remove the gallbladder.

When to See a Doctor

Seek immediate medical care for severe abdominal pain, especially if it is accompanied by nausea, vomiting, or fever.
