Overview
Cervicitis is an inflammation of the cervix, the lower, narrow end of the uterus. It can be acute or chronic and is commonly caused by sexually transmitted infections (STIs). It may be asymptomatic or cause discomfort.
Symptoms
Symptoms include abnormal vaginal discharge (often gray or yellow), vaginal bleeding between periods or after intercourse, painful intercourse, and a dull ache in the lower abdomen.
Causes
Common causes are STIs like chlamydia and gonorrhea. Other causes include bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, and irritation from tampons, douches, or spermicides.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the cause. Antibiotics are used for bacterial infections. If an STI is the cause, sexual partners may also need treatment.
When to See a Doctor
If you have any unusual vaginal discharge, pelvic pain, or bleeding, see a doctor for evaluation.
