Overview
Anemia is a common blood disorder characterized by a deficiency of red blood cells or hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. When you have anemia, your body's tissues don't receive enough oxygen, leading to symptoms like fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath.
Anemia affects people of all ages, but it is most common in women of childbearing age, pregnant women, young children, and older adults. It can range from mild to severe and can be acute or chronic. There are more than 400 types of anemia, which can be broadly classified into three groups: anemia caused by blood loss, anemia caused by decreased or faulty red blood cell production, and anemia caused by destruction of red blood cells.
Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include dietary changes, supplements, medications, or procedures. With proper diagnosis and management, most types of anemia can be successfully treated.
Symptoms
Symptoms of anemia vary depending on the severity and underlying cause. Common symptoms include:
General symptoms:
• Fatigue and weakness
• Pale or yellowish skin
• Shortness of breath
• Dizziness or lightheadedness
• Headaches
• Cold hands and feet
• Chest pain or irregular heartbeat
Other symptoms:
• Brittle nails
• Unusual cravings for non-nutritive substances like ice, dirt, or paper (pica)
• Poor appetite, especially in infants and children
• Restless legs syndrome
• Difficulty concentrating
• Frequent infections (in severe cases)
Mild anemia may produce no symptoms at all and is often discovered during routine blood tests. Symptoms tend to worsen as anemia progresses.
Causes
Anemia occurs when the body doesn't produce enough healthy red blood cells or when red blood cells are destroyed or lost faster than they can be replaced. Common causes include:
Blood loss:
• Heavy menstrual bleeding
• Gastrointestinal bleeding from ulcers, hemorrhoids, or cancer
• Frequent use of pain relievers like aspirin or NSAIDs
• Surgery or trauma
Decreased red blood cell production:
• Iron deficiency (most common worldwide)
• Vitamin B12 deficiency
• Folate deficiency
• Chronic diseases (kidney disease, cancer, HIV/AIDS, rheumatoid arthritis)
• Bone marrow disorders (aplastic anemia, myelodysplastic syndromes)
• Genetic disorders (sickle cell anemia, thalassemia)
Increased red blood cell destruction (hemolysis):
• Autoimmune diseases (autoimmune hemolytic anemia)
• Infections (malaria, sepsis)
• Medications (certain antibiotics, antimalarials)
• Inherited conditions (spherocytosis, G6PD deficiency)
• Enlarged spleen (hypersplenism)
Treatment
Treatment for anemia depends on the underlying cause, severity, and individual patient factors:
Dietary changes and supplements:
• Iron-rich foods: red meat, poultry, fish, beans, lentils, spinach, fortified cereals
• Vitamin C to enhance iron absorption: citrus fruits, tomatoes, bell peppers
• Vitamin B12 sources: meat, eggs, dairy, fortified cereals
• Folate sources: leafy greens, legumes, citrus fruits, fortified grains
• Oral iron supplements, vitamin B12 injections, or folic acid tablets as prescribed
Medical treatments:
• Erythropoietin injections to stimulate red blood cell production (especially for chronic kidney disease)
• Blood transfusions for severe anemia or acute blood loss
• Immunosuppressive medications for autoimmune hemolytic anemia
• Antibiotics or antiparasitic drugs for infections
• Stopping medications that cause anemia
Procedures and surgery:
• Splenectomy (spleen removal) for certain hemolytic anemias
• Stem cell transplant for aplastic anemia or severe blood disorders
• Surgery to stop bleeding sources (e.g., ulcers, tumors)
