Overview

Alcohol intoxication, also commonly referred to as alcohol poisoning or drunkenness, occurs when a person consumes more alcohol than their body can process. The excess alcohol enters the bloodstream and affects the central nervous system, leading to impaired thinking, coordination, and judgment. While mild intoxication may cause relaxation and euphoria, severe intoxication can be life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention. Understanding the signs and risks is crucial for safety and prevention.

Symptoms

Confusion, vomiting, slow breathing. Other signs include slurred speech, poor coordination, unsteady gait, drowsiness, and memory problems. Severe symptoms include irregular or slow breathing (fewer than 8 breaths per minute), low body temperature, pale or bluish skin, seizures, and loss of consciousness. These are medical emergencies and require immediate attention.

Causes

Excess alcohol consumption. The primary cause is drinking a large amount of alcohol in a short period, often referred to as binge drinking. Factors that influence intoxication levels include body weight, age, sex, food intake, drinking pace, and overall health. Certain medications and medical conditions can also increase sensitivity to alcohol.

Treatment

Supportive care and monitoring. For severe alcohol intoxication, emergency medical treatment is essential. This may involve airway management to ensure breathing, intravenous fluids to prevent dehydration, oxygen therapy, and close monitoring of vital signs. In some cases, medications may be used to manage symptoms such as seizures or withdrawal. For mild intoxication, rest, hydration, and time are usually sufficient, but medical evaluation is advised if symptoms worsen.
